Location
Brisbane's finest three suburbs, Hamilton, Ascot & Clayfield, are clustered together to the north of Brisbane City, with Hamilton bordering the Brisbane River.
Hamilton is only 7km from the CBD, with Ascot and Clayfield slightly further to north at around 8km from the CBD. By car, the trip into the city is around ten minutes.
The population of Hamilton is 4,326, Ascot 5,330 and Clayfield 8,973. This will no doubt increase when the Northshore Hamilton development is complete.
Property
The three suburbs feature many of Brisbane's finest homes, which isn't surprising since the area is often referred to as the 'old money' part of Brisbane. Many of Brisbane's wealthy and prominent families call the suburb home.
The most prominent home is Toorak House, situated on a substantial block on Annie St, at the top of Hamilton Hill. Toorak House was originally built circa 1865, with subsequent additions in the following decades.
Along with the many iconic 19th century properties, there are a large number of very grand (but not quite iconic) properties scattered throughout the area. Many of these are the classic Queenslander style, with many of the best examples in the state features in the area.
In additional to the grand old properties are an ever increasing number of modern architect designed homes, the majority of which have been integrated into the area without spoiling its character.
If anything, the addition of the modern homes have added to the diversity of the area, and the very high entry price of land in the area means that only the best new homes are built.
The only sore point could be the unsightly 'six pack' apartment buildings that feature in many streets, however it does offer a lower entry point for aspiring young singles and couples wanting to live in this beautiful area.
One can only cringe at the thought of the grand old homes that would have been knocked down to create these apartment blocks back in the 1970s and 1980s. Thankfully there are laws in place that ensure these iconic homes are now protected for generations to come.
